Featured Community Partner: Forest Area Federal Credit Union
Forest Area Federal Credit Union (FAFCU), founded by Rodney Larr, began humbly inside Larr’s local sporting goods and bait shop in Fife Lake, Michigan, in 1983. Since then, FAFCU has continued to grow and now operates seven branches throughout Northwest Michigan, including locations in Fife Lake, Kingsley, Kalkaska, Manton, Mesick, Lake City, and Cadillac. FAFCU’s commitment to serving members and their communities through excellent member experiences, community outreach, passion and integrity remain the heart of FAFCU’s mission.
As a member-owned financial institution, FAFCU embodies the philosophy of “people helping people.” Its annual community outreach efforts include Adopt-a-Highway roadside clean-ups, November food bank drive, and partnerships with the Northern Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA), such as the Comedy for Community Annual Fundraiser in Cadillac. In February 2025, FAFCU’s entire staff gathered with NMCAA for their annual Professional Development Day to assemble welcome home baskets and tie-blankets for those in the NMCAA program transitioning out of homelessness.
Additionally, the credit union’s Three Tree Fund—supported by employee contributions and donations from the Board of Directors—provides funds for community members facing hardships. These include individuals with medical needs or those impacted by events such as house fires, car accidents, or the loss of a loved one.
“Forest Area’s mission aligns with the Northern Michigan Community Action Agency’s efforts to build stronger communities, starting with ensuring everyone has a safe and stable place to call home. We are committed to making a tangible difference in people’s lives by supporting affordable housing and community development. Together, we can help families build brighter futures,” said Alex Lutke, CEO of Forest Area Federal Credit Union.
