Featured Community Partner: Nancy Plummer of Moomers Homemade Ice Cream of Traverse City
Moomers Homemade Ice Cream grew from a love for ice cream and an idea – an idea that kept emerging through Nancy Plummer’s daily life as a wife, mother of four, and first-grade teacher. The idea was tossed around for three years and living on their dairy farm gave Moomers a natural location. The hope was to provide a unique premium product in a country atmosphere, to share the world of agriculture with others, employ local young adults, and provide a family-oriented place to enjoy with family and friends. In April of 1998, the doors opened. With a quaint family-owned business overlooking the family dairy farm, the Plummers share their passion for ice cream and agriculture with area residents and tourists.
Through passion, hard work, and a premium product, Moomers has continued steady growth in retail, as well as wholesale business. They’re very generous with their success, sharing the love with local non-profit organizations like NMCAA.
Since 2015
In 2015, Meals on Wheels approached Moomers about hosting a fundraiser for the national campaign of “March for Meals” during the month of March – which is the month that Moomers re-opens in the spring. It was a hit. “Pulling the community together for a greatly needed cause…it shows the lives that Meals on Wheels has impacted,” notes Plummer.
The event has evolved over the years and in 2024 celebrated its 10th anniversary. Going from a portion of the day’s sales to 100% of the Hot Fudge Sundae Bar proceeds back into the four county Meals on Wheels program. Alongside Moomers, now several local sponsors also support the event annually. For the third year in a row, Head Start and GSRP students were invited to submit ice cream recipes that were voted on via social media. “I think it’s evolved greatly with the inventive flavors. Originally it was NMCAA/Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers, but now with the little kids in Head Start, it involves a lot more people.” Plummer said. “It’s very family friendly, because, as my son says, the experience is what you remember, the way you feel, that’s what you’re going to remember years from now.” That, and the sweet taste of Moomers Homemade Ice Cream.
