Collaborating for Change
How SSVF works
Now, let’s talk about how we make it all possible. Section 604 of the Veterans’ Mental Health and Other Care Improvements Act of 2008, Public Law 110-387, authorizes the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to develop the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. Furthermore, through this program, SSVF grants go to select private non-profit organizations to assist low-income Veteran families. In summary, these grants support Veterans residing in or transitioning to permanent housing by providing a wide range of supportive services designed to promote housing stability.
Additionally, as an SSVF grantee, NMCAA’s Homeless Prevention department proudly offers SSVF programs across a 23-county region in Northwest Michigan. In fact, our services include Coordinated Entry, Rapid Resolution, Street Outreach, and Case Management. We also provide Housing Resources, Healthcare Navigation, and connections to VA and public benefits. Additionally, Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) is available through our Rapid Re-Housing and Homeless Prevention Assistance programs.

Former Military Member Making a Storage Unit her Home
Imagine sleeping every night in a dark, cold, maggot-infested storage unit, surrounded by everything you own and trying to sleep upright in an office chair on rollers. This is where Tasha, a veteran, found herself surviving during the COVID pandemic.
