Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency’s Housing and Energy Efficiency Services

Housing and Energy Efficiency Services are dedicated to serving the elderly, those with disabilities, and households with children. The primary focus services are Weatherization and Emergency Home Repair. Weatherization is a free conservation program. The goal is to reduce energy costs for families with low-incomes by improving the energy efficiency of their homes. This program focuses on health and safety measurements.

The Emergency Home Repair assists eligible households in need of emergency home repairs. The focus is on homes that present health and safety concerns for the occupants(s). This program provides funding with a 0% interest loan for necessary repairs. We use local licensed as well as insured contractors for necessary repairs.

Client Story

MEET DOUGLAS B.

An elderly veteran who had been out of water in his mobile home since 2012, contacted NMCAA in the Spring of 2023. His well was in disrepair, and it was determined that it would need to be replaced. Since his township had installed a municipal water system, replacing the well was not an option for him, as a local ordinance was not allowing new wells to be installed. Hooking up to the system was cost-prohibitive for Douglas, so he had not been able to do this on his own. HEES staff worked with an excavation company to hook him up to the municipal system, and a plumber to replace his home’s pipes and water heater, that had both been unused for over a decade. The project cost over $13,000 altogether. Douglas can now shower, wash dishes, and do laundry in his own home!
