Weatherization Assistance Program
Weatherization
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) reduces energy costs for low-income households by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes, while ensuring their health and safety. The program supports 8,500 jobs and provides weatherization services to approximately 32,000 homes every year using DOE funds.
Through weatherization improvements and upgrades, these households save on average $372 or more every year according to a national evaluation of the program. Since the program began in 1976, WAP has helped improve the lives of more than 7.2 million families through weatherization services.
NMCAA’s Weatherization Assistance Program serves 11 counties: Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Roscommon, and Wexford.

What Does Weatherization Cover?
How NMCAA can Help
The Weatherization Assistance Program is funded by the Federal Department of Energy (DOE) as well as administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Above all, the program’s goal is to provide free energy conservation services for eligible low-income households. In fact, DHHS contracts with Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA) to operate the Weatherization Assistance Program in our service areas. Of course, the Agency determines applicant eligibility, performs the necessary inspections as well as weatherization and contracts with mechanical contractors to complete mechanical work. For example, these services include:
Home energy audit
Weather-stripping, caulking, general air sealing
Window & door repair
Attic, foundation, wall, or sill box insulation
Furnace repairs, water heater repairs, refrigerator tune-up or replacement
For program information, please call or email NMCAA’s Housing & Energy Efficiency Services.
