Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency offers free tax help for eligible individuals.

Taxes FAQ

Individuals as well as families with AGI at or below $75,000,
seniors, veterans, persons with disabilities. Additionally, people who speak English as their second language qualify for help.

Ultimately, You can visit https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/who-should-file for more
information on this. But even if you do not NEED to file, we encourage everyone to file a tax return with us because you may qualify for hundreds of dollars in State of Michigan Credits, such as the home heating or the property tax credit. These are available for both renters and homeowners, and you do not need to have earned income to qualify! Income sources such as SSI and SSDI may qualify you!

Unfortunately, we only do personal tax returns. However, if you have a small business
or are self-employed (cleaning business, freelancer, contractor, etc.) and have 1099s or schedule C, then we can prepare your tax return!

Furthermore, we can back file up to four years total for you! This includes the most recent year.

Typically, refunds are issued within 21 days. Go to IRS.gov to check the status of your federal refund and Michigan.gov to check the status of your state refund. There is a special spot to check the status of an amended federal return. In particular, amends can take up to 16 weeks to process.

Of course! If NMCAA did not prepare the original return, you must also submit
the original tax return, all supporting documents and a statement informing us of what issues need to be addressed in the new return.

In contrast, you are only penalized for filing after the deadline if you owe taxes. If you break even or get a refund back on state and federal, you can file any time before or after the deadline with no penalty. If you think you MAY owe and cannot file before the deadline, an extension is easy to file yourself at IRS.gov (form 4868).
